  1. Hmm... the one thing that came to my mind instantly would be Aversive Conditioning. It's basically a type of conditioning that is applied to criminals by combining a fearsome stimulus with the crime that they have committed. Eg. purging pills that are induced to drugs taken by the drug addicts, so when the addicts consume the drug, they purge like hell which eventually make them avoid drugs. The part about extinction is the real problem though. =P

That's all I wanna comment this time =)

  3. Sexual and social violence may be attributed to biological mechanisms within the body; we simply cannot deny the fact that we are driven by hormones and compulsions that we cannot seem to inhibit effectively.

Let's take anger as an example. If you are very angry, does logical reasoning make sense to you at that particular moment? I don't think so, because at that particular moment, nothing else matters to you but the underlying problem which causes your anger in the first place. When you are angry, your body switches to a defensive state; anger increases adrenaline and therefore increasing strength and agility. With that amount of energy, you need to release it on something.

If you find yourself unable to control that state of anger, then there is no reason for you to consider murderers and sex offenders as disgusting pigs, freaks or deviants who should be responsible for their actions. It is simply an eruption of biological mechanisms at the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet society seems to view them negatively instead of taking these reasons into account. The media also seems to unfortunately depict these people as evil monsters, but in reality this is not always the case.

I don't see the offenders as criminals; I see them as victims of their own uncontrollability, and they deserve to receive treatment and rehabilitation (and if possible, safe prevention) for their condition. Humans are capable of anything when their emotions run wild, and we are no different than the criminals on a biological scale, and the only thing that separates us from them is how we had been brought up, and how we had been trained to suppress these emotions and compulsions. But when we are thrown into difficult situations, there is no surprise if we start to release our inner demons. I find it disheartening when people condemn criminals instead of condemning the action. I find it saddening that laws are now made to send people to jail instead of protecting the people.

Here are some interesting articles you can read:

Also, try reading the book "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, a story about children trapped on an island who, from religious backgrounds, turn into savages.

I haven't read much on classical conditioning, but one of the techniques I can suggest is distraction. You distract their attention and force them to focus on something else other than anger or sex. Teach them a new hobby, such as reading books or social activities. When their attention is focused on an alternative pleasurable experience, the risk of them committing another crime would be reduced. Pornography and prostitution could also be a form of distraction, by feeding them the lust and curiousity they crave, so that they do not perform the illegal acts, although that may also worsen the problem. But it could also affect their interest; the term "too much of a good thing can be a bad thing" may apply to this case: satisfy their needs until they grow sick and tired of it. Here's another example; you can induce anorexic and bulimic behaviour in food-loving glutton individuals by force-feeding them excessive food until they puke. I know I would end up like that if that were to ever happen to me XD.

Fear can also be a tool to help reduce these crimes; just like the pictures of lung cancer in cigarette packages, we show them pictures of sexually transmitted diseases. Show excessive amounts to them. Or introduce them to people who have suffered these conditions and let them hear their testimonies. By inducing such an experience to them, it would most likely deter them from committing these crimes for life. Although we may not be able to inhibit their lust or emotions, at least they would be conditioned to think twice before taking action. And if extinction occurs, simply repeat the process. I don't think there is such a thing as "one time treatment solves all".

i don't really agree on this. most of those murderers and sex offenders out there did not kill or assault women out of spite, but out of their own sick desires of robbing, raping, and other such felonies. fine, it could also be largely due to the way they were brought up, but that should not be accepted as an excuse. what if everyone was like them, using the same excuses for their actions? the whole world would be in chaos! they should have at least some human sense in them not carry out those atrocities in the first place. they should have considered the consequences of their actions first. well, im not sure if they do so or not. but one thing is for sure, once they commit those sexual and social violence, their victims' life would be shattered forever! it would just so difficult to live on with their lives after being outraged of their modesty, especially if it involves rape or a terrible abuse(physically and mentally).imagine the trauma they would have to painfully go through just because of that one sick-minded-cannot-control-his-own-hormones criminal. not all of us would be as strong as Oprah Winfrey to move on again and be strong enough to accept and then let go of the horrifying experience.
